Austria – Climate & Travel Time Overview

Austria offers two completely different holiday worlds climatically: the Alpine regions (Tyrol, Salzburg Land) with ski resorts in winter and hiking paradises in summer, and Vienna with a mild continental urban climate year-round. The unifying element is the Föhn — the warm southerly wind that in spring and autumn brings spectacular long-distance views of the Alpine chain and pushes temperatures surprisingly high.

For city breaks to Vienna and Salzburg, spring (April/May) and autumn (September/October) are ideal: 16–22°C, little rain and no high-season overcrowding. Tyrol and the ski resorts have their best time from December to March; the hiking season starts in June and runs until October. For all regions: summer (July/August) is high season — book early.
