Denmark (Bornholm) – What you should know

Bornholm lies further east than the rest of Denmark, out in the Baltic — and is the sunniest region of the country. The figures are unambiguous: 10.9 hours of sunshine a day in May and 11.1 in June, more than on Rügen and considerably more than on the German North Sea coast. The island often sits outside the cloud fields hanging over Jutland and Zealand.

Temperatures stay Nordic: 21°C in July and August, 3°C in winter. The Baltic reaches 18°C in August and 17°C in July — cool, but the island has one of the finest-sand beaches in the Baltic at Dueodde in the south, and swimming there in midsummer is entirely normal.

Spring is the strongest season. April and May are the driest months at 24 and 33 mm, already with nine to eleven hours of sunshine — ideal for the round churches, the rocky northwest coast and the cycle routes Bornholm is known for. Summer brings the most water at 77 mm in July and August, while winter offers very little light at 1.0 to 1.4 hours of sunshine in December and January.
