Chalkidiki – What you should know
Chalkidiki, the three-pronged peninsula south of Thessaloniki, is northern Greece's main beach destination. The climate resembles the Aegean standard: hot summers of 28–32°C (82–90°F), barely any rain from May to September and clear blue water at 24–26°C (75–79°F). The bays of the middle finger (Sithonia) with their fine white sand are among the most beautiful in the European Mediterranean.
High season in July to August brings many Greeks from Thessaloniki to the sea — the beaches of Kassandra (first finger) are then full, while Sithonia remains quieter. One advantage over Greek islands: Chalkidiki is reachable by car and has restaurants and accommodation open even in the shoulder season.

December – February
Winter quiet on the three fingers: 10 to 12°C (50 to 54°F), the resorts closed, Thessaloniki an hour away as a fallback. On Athos the monastic routine carries on unmoved, as it has for a thousand years.
March – May
Kassandra and Sithonia turn green, the pine forests run down to the water, and the coast roads are clear. From May, at 25°C (77°F) air and 19°C (66°F) water, the season starts cautiously.
June – August
High season: 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), only one or two rain days, the Aegean at 26 to 27°C (79 to 81°F). Sithonia is the quieter of the two accessible fingers — small coves instead of hotel rows.
September – November
September is the best month: 27°C (81°F) air, 25°C (77°F) water, half-empty beaches. October brings the olive harvest, and from November the peninsula is left to itself again.
