The best time to visit Mexico (Riviera Maya) is January, February, March, April, May, and December. In summer, temperatures rise to 32°C; in winter they can drop to 20°C. All climate data are based on historical monthly averages (2005–2025) to help you plan the optimal travel time.
The Riviera Maya between Playa del Carmen and Tulum has a Caribbean climate with very small temperature swings: between 27°C in January and 32°C in July and August. The sea sits between 26°C and 29°C year-round. Judged on temperature alone there is no bad time to visit — the differences lie in rainfall and wind.
The dry season from February to April is the most dependable phase: 25 to 33 mm a month across three to four rain days, with up to 8.6 hours of sunshine daily. From June the picture turns — September and October bring 133 and 138 mm across thirteen to fourteen days, and these months also coincide with the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.
One factor appears in no climate table but strongly shapes a beach holiday here: sargassum seaweed. For some years now, large mats of algae have drifted onto Yucatán's Caribbean coast between roughly May and October, with intensity varying sharply by year and by stretch of beach. Anyone sensitive to it should plan for December to April — which is the driest and most pleasant period in any case.
