Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
January is the coldest winter month in Albania — with highs of only 14°C (57°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 14°C (57°F) during the day and drop to 5°C (41°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 18°C (64°F), the coldest nights around -2°C (28°F) — frost does occur. With 5 sunshine hours per day and 10 rain days (148 mm (5.8 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 15°C (59°F), the water is still quite cool in January — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Winter on the Riviera: 14 to 15°C (57 to 59°F) on the coast, but with nine to ten rain days a month the wettest stretch of the year. Tirana carries on as normal while Ksamil and Himara are closed — and there is snow inland.
