Rio de Janeiro lies at latitude 23°S and has a tropical-humid climate with reversed seasons compared to Europe. The Brazilian summer (December to March) is hot, humid and rainy — the famous afternoon showers are part of daily life, but rarely persist for days on end. Winter (June to September) is more pleasant and drier, with temperatures typically around 21–26°C.
The Carnival in February is Rio's most legendary highlight — but also a climatic challenge: muggy heat, intense sun and frequent thunderstorms can make celebrating outdoors exhausting. The beach days at Copacabana and Ipanema are nonetheless unforgettable.
The best travel time for Rio de Janeiro is May to October: pleasant temperatures (typically 21–27°C), less rain and clearer air for the spectacular view from Sugarloaf Mountain over the bay. Air pollution is also lower in these months and the sky over the Christ statue usually cloud-free.
