Fiji lies in the South Pacific and has a tropical island climate with two seasons. The dry season from May to October is the ideal travel time: pleasant temperatures of 23–27°C, lower humidity and calm seas create perfect conditions for snorkelling and diving in one of the world's richest coral reef systems. Underwater visibility can reach 30–40 metres.
The rainy season from November to April is hot, humid and carries the risk of tropical cyclones. Rain often falls in short, intense showers and leaves behind a brilliantly green island landscape. Many resorts offer significantly lower rates during this period — those who are flexible and can tolerate rain can save considerably.
Fiji is also climatically divided: the south-east coasts of the main islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are wetter, as they face the trade winds. The north-west coasts are drier and sunnier — this is where the most popular resorts are. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands west of Viti Levu are considered the most climatically stable areas of Fiji.
