Australia (Tasmania) – What you should know

Tasmania lies in the southern hemisphere, which inverts the travel calendar: the warmest months are December to February at 21–23°C, while July is the coolest at 13°C. This is not a swimming destination — the sea reaches only 18°C even in February and drops to 11°C in winter. People come to Tasmania for the national parks, the walking tracks and the wilderness, not for the beach.

The decisive figure is sunshine duration. June and July manage only 1.4 to 1.7 hours a day — figures comparable to northern Europe. January, by contrast, brings 7.1 hours with long summer evenings, as Hobart sits further south than Auckland. That leaves a clear window from November to March for the Overland Track and the coastal walks.

Rainfall is remarkably evenly spread across the year, between 28 mm in February and 50 mm in August — so Tasmania is not as wet as its reputation suggests, but it is never reliably dry either. What matters more is how fast the weather turns: the island sits in the belt of the Roaring Forties, and the highlands can drop below 5°C even in January. Weatherproof clothing belongs in the luggage year-round.
