The best time to visit Athens is May, June, July, August, and September. In summer, temperatures rise to 32°C; in winter they can drop to 5°C. Rainfall is very low during the best travel period (17 mm), making Athens an ideal destination.
Athens has a classically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. In high summer (July/August), the thermometer in the Greek capital climbs as a monthly average to typically 32–33°C — the Acropolis and other sights become a test of patience under the blazing midday sun. Those who want to fully enjoy the ancient sites should visit them early in the morning or just before sunset.
Spring and autumn are the ideal travel seasons for Athens: in April and May wildflowers bloom in the city's surroundings, and temperatures of 20–25°C are perfect for extended strolls through the Plaka and the archaeological museum. In October/November, mild temperatures of 18–23°C and uncrowded sights invite leisurely exploration.
Athens benefits in summer from the Meltemi, the characteristic north wind of the Aegean: it cools the city noticeably during the hottest hours of the day and makes the summer more bearable than in Istanbul or Cairo. The wind is, however, strong enough that it can occasionally delay or cancel boat trips to the nearby islands.
