Sardinia is considered the wild sister of Sicily — more unspoilt, quieter, and climatically very attractive as well. The climate is Mediterranean with long, dry summers and mild winters. Sardinia is particularly renowned for its bathing waters: the sea here is considered some of the clearest and cleanest in the Mediterranean.
In summer the Maestrale — a powerful north-westerly wind — dominates the island's weather. It brings welcome cooling on hot days, but can rough up the sea and complicate boat trips. The sheltered bays of the south and east are the better choice on such days.
June and September are the ideal months: the water is typically warm (23–26°C), temperatures are pleasantly high, and the island is considerably quieter than in high summer. Those who prefer nature and hiking come in spring — when the macchia blossoms and the island sinks into a sea of wildflowers.
