Sicily is the largest Mediterranean island and has a pronounced Mediterranean climate with the hottest summers in Italy. From July to August, average high temperatures typically reach 32°C on the coast; in the interior and with Scirocco influence, considerably higher values can occur. Sea breezes moderate the heat somewhat on the coast, but sightseeing at ancient sites such as Agrigento or Selinunte is demanding at these temperatures.
Spring and autumn are Sicily's golden time: in April and May the almonds and citrus trees blossom, nature is lush and green, and temperatures of 18–24°C make walks on Mount Etna and through nature reserves a pleasure. In October and November the sea is still warm (typically 23–26°C) and the island considerably quieter than in high summer.
Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano (3,350 m), influences the climate of the east coast around Catania: its ash clouds can occasionally affect Catania airport, and during eruptions the surrounding air carries a slight smell of sulphur. Winter visits to the snow slopes of Etna are possible from December to February — a surreal experience with palm trees in the foreground.
