Italy stretches climatically from the snow-covered Alps in the north to the near-North African conditions of Sicily in the south. The coastal regions of Sardinia and Sicily have hot, dry summers with up to 34°C and clear Mediterranean waters — ideal for a beach holiday from June to September. Naples and the Amalfi Coast are somewhat more moderate, with a longer shoulder season in April, May and October.
Sicily is one of Europe's hottest destinations in summer — in July and August temperatures can exceed 38°C. Those who want to visit the Greek temples of Agrigento or the Baroque towns of the Valle di Noto should travel in May or September instead. Sardinia, by contrast, has more Atlantic influence: summer days are hot but frequent sea breezes make the heat more bearable than in Sicily.
