The best time to visit South Africa (Cape Town) is January, February, March, and December. In summer, daytime highs average 27°C (81°F), with peaks around 34°C (93°F); in winter, nights average 9°C (48°F), dropping to around 2°C (36°F) on the coldest. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 11 hours per day — ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Cape Town enjoys one of the world's finest climates: Mediterranean, mild and sun-drenched. Summer (November to March) is hot and dry with temperatures typically between 24°C (75°F) and 26°C (79°F) — ideal for beach days at Camps Bay or Boulders Beach. Winter (June to August) is cool and rainy (typically 12–17°C (54–63°F)), but rarely cold enough to rule out outdoor activities.
The Cape Wind — a powerful south-easterly locally called the "Cape Doctor" — is a defining part of Cape Town's climate. It sweeps regularly across Table Bay in summer, cooling the city pleasantly, but can complicate boat trips to Robben Island or Cape Point. On Table Mountain it blows particularly strongly and creates the characteristic "tablecloth" of cloud.
The wine regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek enjoy a Mediterranean wine-growing climate and benefit from the combination of solar warmth and cooling night temperatures — ideal for the grape harvest from February to April. Nature lovers should come in spring (September/October), when the fynbos heathland blooms in countless colours and whales can be spotted in Walker Bay with their calves.

November offers great weather in South Africa (Cape Town) with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
Cape Town high summer: Table Mountain clear in the morning, with its tablecloth of cloud rolling in by afternoon. Boulders Beach has its full complement of penguins, and the Winelands around Stellenbosch are in their best light. The Kaapse Klopse on 2 January bring colour to the streets.
Harvest autumn: the wine estates in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch invite you to the harvest, the light turns more golden and visitor numbers fall. The best temperatures for hiking Table Mountain — before winter sets in.
Winter rain from the west: the Cape of Good Hope is dramatically beautiful in a storm, and whale season begins off Hermanus. Cape Town works in the rain too — museums, wine tastings at the V&A Waterfront. Noticeably lower prices.
Spring and blossom: the fynbos flowers in Western Cape colours, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden bursts into life, and the first swimmers brave the still-cool Atlantic coast.
Thousands of colourfully costumed musicians and dancers parade through the streets of Cape Town — a living tradition rooted in the era of slavery and celebrated since the 19th century.
One of Africa's biggest jazz festivals, with more than 40 local and international artists at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
