Tunisia (Djerba) – What you should know

Djerba, the largest island in North Africa, has a mild Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and pleasant winters. The swimming season runs from May to October; high summer (July/August) brings temperatures of typically 33–34°C and a shallow, turquoise sea that warms on average to 28–29°C. Djerba is therefore an ideal family destination with calm, shallow water.

Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant on Djerba: temperatures of 20–27°C, little wind and barely any rain make these months the best time for excursions into the interior, to the medina of Houmt Souk or to the island's historic synagogues and mosques.

Occasionally, hot sandy winds from the Sahara — locally called "Sirocco" — reach the island and push temperatures briefly well above 35°C. These heat periods usually last 2–3 days before subsiding. Winters on Djerba are mild (typically 13–18°C) and well-suited to cultural travellers who want to escape the European winter.
