Morocco (Agadir) – What you should know

Agadir on Morocco's Atlantic south coast has a climate that differs fundamentally from Marrakech and the rest of the Mediterranean coast: the cold Canary Current off the coast keeps summer temperatures at a surprisingly moderate 28–32°C — noticeably cooler than the interior or the Riviera. At the same time, the sun shines almost year-round, and rain is virtually non-existent from May to September.

The Atlantic off Agadir is, however, cooler than many beach visitors expect: water temperatures of 19–21°C in summer are too cool for many Europeans for extended swimming. In autumn (October to November) the water temperature rises to 22–23°C — then is the most pleasant time at the beach. Wave riders appreciate Agadir year-round: the constant Atlantic swell makes the beaches north of the city popular surf spots.

The best travel time for Agadir is March to May and September to November: pleasant temperatures (typically 21–27°C), little wind and manageable tourist numbers. In winter (December to February), with typically 16–21°C, Agadir has Morocco's warmest winter climate — no wonder it is popular with northern European seniors as a winter escape. An excursion to the Atlas foothills is worthwhile: within an hour's drive, you switch from the Atlantic coast to Berber culture.
