Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
January is the coldest winter month in Austria (Salzkammergut) — with highs of only 3°C (37°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 3°C (37°F) during the day and drop to -3°C (27°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 9°C (48°F), the coldest nights around -11°C (12°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 11 rain days (126 mm (5.0 in)), this is one of the cloudier months.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Snow-covered lakes and villages that glow in the twilight: Advent, with its markets, is among the loveliest in the country, and afterwards calm settles. Low cloud is common, but on crisp, clear days the mountains above the water look painted.
On the eve of Epiphany, white-clad "Glöckler" wearing large caps lit from inside run through the villages to drive away evil spirits. The custom originated in Ebensee on Lake Traunsee.
