Croatia (Krk) – What you should know

Krk is Croatia's largest island and reachable by bridge, which makes it the most convenient island destination on the Adriatic. Climatically it belongs to the Kvarner Gulf and is noticeably wetter than Istria or Dalmatia: at around 210 mm in November and 160 mm in September, nearly twice as much rain falls here as in Pula, barely 60 kilometres away.

Midsummer largely escapes this. July and August reach 29–30°C across five to six rain days, with the sea at 24°C. The island has two faces: the south around Baška is dry and bare, the north green and wooded — a contrast caused by the bora, which strikes the northeastern coast across the narrow channel to the mainland.

That same bora is why Krk is a different destination outside summer than its neighbours. In winter it can blow at storm force for days and shut down ferry traffic across the region. For a beach holiday, June to September are the clear months; for hiking or cycling, May and October offer more comfortable conditions at 19–21°C.
