Croatia has one of Europe's most beautiful Adriatic coastlines — along with a reliable Mediterranean climate. From May to October the sun shines 8–12 hours daily, the Adriatic warms to 22–26°C, and summer stays pleasant thanks to the Maestral breeze. Istria in the north is somewhat more temperate and greener than Dalmatia in the south; Dubrovnik is the high-season hot spot with an overtourism risk in July and August.
The best travel time is May, June and September: superb weather, warm sea and considerably fewer visitors than in high summer. Those who want to explore the national parks (Plitvice Lakes, Kornati) should travel in spring or autumn — July and August bring long queues. The Bora, a powerful north-easterly wind, can surge up suddenly, especially in winter and spring, and complicate boat trips.
