The best time to visit Cuba (Santiago de Cuba) is January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, November, and December. In summer, daytime highs average 32°C (90°F), with peaks around 34°C (93°F); in winter, nights average 21°C (70°F), dropping to around 17°C (63°F) on the coldest. Rainfall is very low during the best travel period (16 mm (0.6 in)), making Cuba (Santiago de Cuba) an ideal destination.
Santiago de Cuba lies in the southeast of the island, framed by the Sierra Maestra, and is regarded as the most Caribbean, most Afro-Cuban city in the country: son and trova were born here, and the culture is noticeably different from Havana. Daytime highs average between 29°C (84°F) in winter and 32°C (90°F) in summer, and nights are mild at 20–24°C (68–75°F). The sun shines 7 to almost 10 hours a day, and at 26–29°C (79–84°F) the sea is warm enough for swimming all year.
The seasons differ clearly in rainfall: December to April is noticeably drier, while the rainy season runs from May to October with peaks around May and June and again in September and October. Short, heavy thunderstorms then arrive and the air turns muggy. The hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk from August to October, and the southeast is exposed.
The most pleasant time for city sightseeing is the drier period from December to April, when exploring the old town, the Castillo del Morro and the Santa Ifigenia cemetery (with the graves of José Martí and Fidel Castro) is most manageable at 29°C (84°F). Santiago's carnival takes place in July, in the middle of the hot season, and is one of the most important in Cuba. Anyone wanting to experience it should accept daytime highs around 32°C (90°F), around 34°C (93°F) on the hottest days, and the mugginess.

The dry, pleasant season: the sky is mostly clear, the days are warm without being oppressive, and the nights stay mild. The city is easy to explore on foot now, and son and trova drift out of the Casas de la Trova in the evenings. The sea is warm enough for swimming.
This is the first rainy season: muggy days with heavy afternoon thunderstorms, after which it often clears up. The heat builds, the city feels calmer, and the green of the Sierra Maestra is especially intense. A good moment for travellers who do not shy away from the heat.
High summer in Cuba's hottest city: the sun beats down, the sea is almost 30°C (86°F) and life shifts into the evening hours. In July the carnival turns the streets into a sea of drums, costumes and dance. Visitors need water, shade and patience.
Autumn brings the second rainy season and the risk of storms. October is the wettest, the air is muggy and the days are changeable. In November the weather gradually settles, the heat eases and the city returns to the calmer main travel season.
A week of music, dance and folk culture from across the Caribbean, organised by the Casa del Caribe with a different guest country each year. It closes with the burning of a devil figure on the Alameda by the bay.
Cuba's most famous carnival: congas with drum sections and hundreds of dancers move through the neighbourhoods, joined by paseos with orchestras. The climax falls on the anniversary of the 1953 attack on the Moncada barracks.
