Norderney – What you should know

Norderney is the second-largest East Frisian island and sits outside the usual holiday-island cliché: July and August reach 21°C, and the North Sea manages 18–19°C. What distinguishes it is the Reizklima — salt-laden, low-pollen air that has made the island a health resort since the nineteenth century and remains its main selling point.

Compared with Sylt, Norderney is wetter and duller. July brings 87 mm against Sylt's 72 mm, and sunshine duration stays well below the more northerly island at 6.1 hours in June versus 7.6. April is the driest month at 33 mm and, at 5.4 hours of sunshine, one of the brightest — spring is the underrated season here.

Anyone coming for the Wadden Sea should treat the tide table as more important than the forecast: mudflat walks follow low water, not the sun. From November to February it gets very dark at 0.7 to 2.0 hours of sunshine a day, and wet too, with ten to eleven rain days a month. The season realistically runs from April to October.
