Baltic Sea Coast – What you should know

The German Baltic coast between the Bay of Lübeck and Rügen is climatically the friendlier of Germany's two coasts. July and August highs sit at 22°C, and the Baltic reaches 19–20°C — one to two degrees above the North Sea, because the water is less saline, shallower and less mixed. There is also less wind than on the North Sea.

Rainfall favours the Baltic too: March and April bring only 30 mm a month, and the annual total is well below Sylt or Norderney. July is the wettest month at 72 mm, which is moderate for a German summer. Low spring rainfall combined with 7.1 to 8.6 hours of sunshine from April to June makes spring particularly attractive here.

The swimming season is short and clearly bounded: July to September, with August the best month and September the insider tip, when the water still holds 17°C and the beaches are empty. Winter, by contrast, is dark — 0.8 hours of sunshine a day in December. The coast then works as a destination for storm walks and spa hotels, not for light.
