Off-season — lowest travel prices with still acceptable climate.
March in Ireland (Dublin) is on the cool side — with highs around 10°C (50°F) it's less suited for a beach holiday, but good for sightseeing away from the high season.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 10°C (50°F) during the day and drop to 3°C (37°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 14°C (57°F), the coldest nights around -3°C (27°F) — frost does occur. With 4 sunshine hours per day and 7 rain days (53 mm (2.1 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 8°C (46°F), the water is still quite cool in March — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
St Patrick's Day turns the city green around 17 March, after which things calm down. April is comparatively dry with six rainy days, and May brings six hours of sunshine a day. The parks bloom and the coast around Howth is hiked again.
Ireland's national day is celebrated in Dublin over several days. The highlight is the parade at noon on 17 March along O'Connell Street and over O'Connell Bridge, with more than 3,000 participants.
