The best time to visit Rome is June, July, August, and September. In summer, daytime highs average 30°C (86°F), with peaks around 35°C (95°F); in winter, nights average 5°C (41°F), dropping to around -1°C (30°F) on the coldest. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 11 hours per day — ideal for beach and outdoor activities.
Rome has a classically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, occasionally rainy winters. From June to September, temperatures typically rise to 26–30°C (79–86°F) — sightseeing is then very tiring under the midday sun. Early morning and late evening tours are indispensable at this time.
The best travel time is April to June and September to October: temperatures of 18–26°C (64–79°F), most sights easily accessible and city life vibrant on the streets. In spring the pines and orange trees blossom, and the golden afternoon light of Rome makes antiquity glow. November to March is Rome's quietest time — cooler, fewer tourists and relaxed museums.

From May to August, UV levels in Rome reach 9 — very high on the WHO scale. High-SPF sunscreen and shade around midday are essential.
May offers great weather in Rome with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
Rome in winter is Rome without the queue. 13°C (55°F), the odd rainy spell, but the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are bearable for the first time all year. The city is full between the holidays, then pleasantly empty in January and February.
The classic season: the orange trees on the Aventine are in bloom, temperatures run 16 to 23°C (61 to 73°F), and you can walk all day. Trastevere and the Spanish Steps are correspondingly crowded — and hotel prices climb.
Hot and hard: up to 30°C (86°F), barely any shade on the Forum, stone holding the heat into the night. In August the Romans leave and many trattorias close — but the back streets are emptier than at any other time.
The Roman autumn is the secret best season: still 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) in September and October, golden light over the rooftops, the city back to everyday life. November then brings the wettest month of the year with eight rain days.
On the anniversary of Rome's founding (753 BC), historic parades, gladiator duels and fireworks take place at the Circus Maximus. Many state museums offer free admission on this day.
Italy's national holiday commemorating the proclamation of the republic in 1946. A military parade along the Via dei Fori Imperiali; the Quirinal Palace opens its gardens to the public.
