The best time to visit Amalfi Coast is June, July, August, and September. In summer, temperatures rise to 30°C; in winter they can drop to 6°C. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 9 hours per day — ideal for beach and outdoor activities.
The Amalfi Coast has the summer it is famous for: 30°C in July and August with 14 and 18 mm of rain, so effectively dry. The Tyrrhenian Sea reaches 26°C in August and stays at 22°C into October. The cliff coast between Positano and Amalfi is so exposed that there is a breeze almost everywhere — which makes the heat far more bearable than inland Naples.
Autumn tips over quickly and decisively. From a dry August at 18 mm it goes to 77 mm in September and 139 mm in November across ten rain days — the wettest month of the year. Sunshine duration halves from 9.8 hours in July to 3.8 in November. Visiting the coast in late autumn means a different region, where many hotels and restaurants have closed anyway.
The walk many people come for — the Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods above the coast — is punishing in high summer: barely any shade, 30°C, and the climb starts at sea level. May and October, at 22°C, are the right months. May has the added advantage that the lemon groves defining the region, and supplying its limoncello, are then in blossom.
