Mallorca – What you should know

Mallorca is more than beach clubs and sunbathing — the largest Balearic island surprises with remarkable climatic diversity. While coastal areas are hot and dry in summer, the Tramuntana mountains in the northwest stay a few degrees cooler year-round. Hikers and cyclists particularly love the spring, when the island bursts into full bloom after the winter rains.

A special natural spectacle are the almond blossoms: as early as mid-January, entire hillsides turn white and pink — a display that lasts only a few weeks and transforms the island into a fairytale landscape reminiscent of North Africa. Those who want to experience this moment should follow the local press, which reports daily on where the blossoms are most spectacular.

In autumn, Mallorca is often worthwhile for longer than you'd expect: by mid-October, daytime temperatures frequently hover around 22–24°C, and the Mediterranean has typically warmed to a pleasant 23–26°C. However, the risk of severe autumn storms — what Mallorcans call "Gota Fría" — increases at this time. Those who prefer to play it safe should travel in June or September.
