Montenegro on the Adriatic is one of Europe's smallest countries and has much to offer climatically: the coast with Kotor and Budva enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. The hinterland rises quickly into mountain terrain — completely different conditions prevail there, with snow in winter and cooler summers.
The coastal season runs from June to September: temperatures of typically 28–30°C, clear Adriatic water (typically 22–25°C) and numerous beaches and bays. Montenegro is also considerably cheaper and less crowded than Croatia and has developed into an insider destination in recent years. The Bay of Kotor is one of Europe's most beautiful natural harbours.
Spring (April/May) and autumn (September/October) are ideal for combined coast-and-mountain trips: in Durmitor National Park, hiking trails are then either still or already clear, while the coast offers temperatures of 18–25°C. In May, it is theoretically possible to swim in the sea and see snow in the mountains on the same day.
