The best time to visit Norway (Lofoten) is June, July, August, and September. In summer, daytime highs average 17°C (63°F), with peaks around 24°C (75°F); in winter, nights average -2°C (28°F), dropping to around -7°C (19°F) on the coldest. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 10 hours per day — ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
The Lofoten rise as a wall of mountains straight out of the Norwegian Sea, north of the Arctic Circle at around 68° north — and thanks to the Gulf Stream they are far milder than the latitude suggests. Daytime highs average 2°C (36°F) in January and 16°C (61°F) in July, around 24°C (75°F) on the warmest days. The midnight sun shines roughly from late May to mid-July; around the turn of the year the sun barely clears the horizon.
As for rain: autumn and winter are wet and stormy, late spring and early summer comparatively dry. From May to July the sun shines nine to ten hours a day on average, with June the brightest month. The sea reaches about 13°C (55°F) in August. The red rorbuer cabins of Reine and Hamnøy, hikes such as Reinebringen and Kvalvika, and the turquoise-water beaches are most accessible in these months.
From January to April the skrei, spawning cod, arrives, and the wooden racks where stockfish dries shape the look of the villages — an authentic winter reason to visit, with temperatures around freezing. The northern lights can be seen from September to March; September, at 12°C (54°F) on average and around four hours of sunshine, is the transition month with autumn colours. From November to February roads and ferries depend on the weather, and many accommodations are closed.

May offers great weather in Norway (Lofoten) with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
Around the turn of the year the sun stays below the horizon and storms lash the islands. The wooden drying racks in the fishing villages still stand empty — stockfish goes up from February. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, temperatures hover around freezing. Many accommodations are shut, but the northern lights over the peaks are hard to beat.
The skrei cod catch shapes the villages, the days lengthen noticeably and snow often reaches down to the sea. Ski tours with a view over the water are the highlight now; in April the sun shines seven hours a day on average. Weather and roads stay moody.
The midnight sun, lasting until mid-July, bathes Reine and Hamnøy in golden light, and the trails up Reinebringen and to the beaches at Kvalvika are open. This is the driest and brightest stretch of the year, but also the busiest: parking and rorbuer cabins book up early. The sea stays cool at 9 to 13°C (48 to 55°F).
Autumn paints the mountainsides red and brown, and in September darkness and the northern lights return. It gets wetter and windier, and the ferries run less reliably. Photographers and quiet-seekers share the islands with few others.
Arctic cod (skrei) migrate from the Barents Sea to spawn off Lofoten. The drying racks fill with fish, and fishing trips head out from Svolvær.
Held in Svolvær every year since 1991: around 600 professional and amateur anglers on some 80 boats compete for the title, watched by thousands in the harbour.
