Post-season — prices falling after the travel period, beaches and attractions quieter.
October is the coldest winter month in Norway (Lofoten) — with highs of only 8°C (46°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 8°C (46°F) during the day and drop to 5°C (41°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 13°C (55°F), the coldest nights around -2°C (28°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 10 rain days (78 mm (3.1 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 10°C (50°F), the water is still quite cool in October — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Autumn paints the mountainsides red and brown, and in September darkness and the northern lights return. It gets wetter and windier, and the ferries run less reliably. Photographers and quiet-seekers share the islands with few others.
