Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
March is the coldest winter month in Norway (Lofoten) — with highs of only 3°C (37°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 3°C (37°F) during the day and drop to -1°C (30°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 7°C (45°F), the coldest nights around -7°C (19°F) — frost does occur. With 5 sunshine hours per day and 9 rain days (87 mm (3.4 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 4°C (39°F), the water is still quite cool in March — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The skrei cod catch shapes the villages, the days lengthen noticeably and snow often reaches down to the sea. Ski tours with a view over the water are the highlight now; in April the sun shines seven hours a day on average. Weather and roads stay moody.
Held in Svolvær every year since 1991: around 600 professional and amateur anglers on some 80 boats compete for the title, watched by thousands in the harbour.
