The best time to visit Slovenia is June and July. In summer, daytime highs average 28°C (82°F), with peaks around 34°C (93°F); in winter, nights average -3°C (27°F), dropping to around -10°C (14°F) on the coldest. All climate data are based on historical monthly averages (2005–2025) to help you plan the optimal travel time.
Slovenia is small but climatically varied: the Julian Alps with Triglav, the hills around Ljubljana and the short Adriatic coast at Piran lie only a few hours apart by car. The figures here describe the centre of the country. In July daytime highs average 28°C (82°F), 34°C (93°F) on the hottest days, with nights at 15°C (59°F) — around Bled and Bohinj in the Alpine foothills it is noticeably cooler.
June and July are the sunniest months (eight hours a day) with moderate rain of 104 and 110 mm (4.1 and 4.3 in) over eight days each. August is somewhat wetter at 127 mm (5.0 in). September stands out at 176 mm (6.9 in), the wettest month of the year, even though daytime highs of 22°C (72°F) remain pleasant. For hiking in the Julian Alps and along the Soča, June and July are the most reliable time.
Winter is grey: from November to January the sun shines only 1.3–1.5 hours a day; in January daytime highs are 4°C (39°F), nights -3°C (27°F), around -10°C (14°F) on the coldest nights. Winter visitors should have Ljubljana or the Postojna caves in mind, not the Alpine valleys. October, at 16°C (61°F) by day and 107 mm (4.2 in), is still workable for a city trip.

In July, UV levels in Slovenia reach 8 — very high on the WHO scale. High-SPF sunscreen and shade around midday are essential.
April offers great weather in Slovenia with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
Slovenia in winter is grey but cosy: Ljubljana glows in Advent, the cafés along the river are full and snow lies in the Alpine valleys. Sunshine is rare, but prices are low and the sights are empty.
Spring brings blossom, strong greens and cool mornings. In the Julian Alps snow lies for a long time above 1,500 metres (4,921 ft), while in Ljubljana people already sit outdoors. Showers become frequent in May — which is when the waterfalls carry the most water.
Summer in Slovenia means water: Lake Bled, Bohinj, the Soča and the Adriatic coast at Piran invite swimming, paddling and rafting. The days are long and sunny, the evenings warm. Around Bled it is busy at weekends, but away from the hotspots it stays quiet.
September can be wet, yet it stays mild in between and the grape harvest begins. In October the country turns colourful and mushroom and chestnut season starts. In November the sun sits low and fog lies over the Ljubljana basin.
Slovenia's largest carnival in Ptuj: the Kurenti, dressed in shaggy sheepskins with cowbells on their belts, are meant to drive out winter.
Season finale of the Ski Jumping World Cup on the ski-flying hill in the Planica valley near Kranjska Gora, watched by tens of thousands of spectators.
Concerts, opera and ballet at venues across the capital throughout the summer.
Festival marking the cattle drive in Ukanc on Lake Bohinj: herders bring the decorated cattle down from the high pastures, with folk music and regional food.
