Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
February is the coldest winter month in Slovenia — with highs of only 7°C (45°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June and July.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 7°C (45°F) during the day and drop to -1°C (30°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 15°C (59°F), the coldest nights around -9°C (16°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 7 rain days (84 mm (3.3 in)), this is one of the cloudier months.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Slovenia in winter is grey but cosy: Ljubljana glows in Advent, the cafés along the river are full and snow lies in the Alpine valleys. Sunshine is rare, but prices are low and the sights are empty.
Slovenia's largest carnival in Ptuj: the Kurenti, dressed in shaggy sheepskins with cowbells on their belts, are meant to drive out winter.
