Sri Lanka has a complex monsoon climate that varies greatly by region. While the south-west monsoon (May–September) drenches the west coast with Colombo and the mountain regions with heavy rainfall, the east coast around Trincomalee remains dry and sunny. In winter the picture reverses: the west coast is then ideal, while the north-east monsoon hits the east coast.
The best travel month for most Sri Lanka visitors is December to March: the west coast with Colombo, Galle and the beaches of the south coast shows itself at its best, temperatures are pleasant (typically 29–31°C), and the air is clearer than in the humid summer. The mountain region around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya is cooler and greener year-round.
Sri Lanka is increasingly suffering from the effects of climate change: monsoon rains are becoming more intense, dry periods longer. Travellers should keep a close eye on short-term weather forecasts and bring flexible travel plans. Despite this, the island remains a climatically fascinating destination — nowhere else can you travel in a single day from tropical coast to cool tea plantations.
