Phuket and the Andaman Sea to the west of Thailand follow a different climate rhythm to the Gulf coast in the east. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rainfall and rough seas to the west coast from May to October — during this period the east coast with Koh Samui is the better choice. From November to April, however, Phuket enjoys perfect beach weather with calm seas and brilliant sunshine.
Phuket's high season (December to March) coincides with the German winter — it's no coincidence that hundreds of thousands of Germans use these months for a winter escape to Thailand. Temperatures remain typically at 29–31°C year-round; only humidity and rainfall vary significantly between the seasons.
Those who want to travel more cheaply should go in the shoulder season: April and October still offer acceptable conditions at lower prices. April is particularly hot (Songkran festival!), while in October the season is getting started again. The sea can be a little unsettled at these times, but snorkelling and diving are usually still possible.
