Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
January is the coldest winter month in Sweden (Stockholm) — with highs of only 1°C (34°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 1°C (34°F) during the day and drop to -3°C (27°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 7°C (45°F), the coldest nights around -12°C (10°F) — frost does occur. With 1 sunshine hour per day and 6 rain days (39 mm (1.5 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 1°C (34°F), the water is still quite cool in January — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Cold and dark, yet beautiful: Lucia processions, Christmas markets in Gamla Stan and frozen bays where skaters glide. Daytime highs sit at about 1 to 3°C (34 to 37°F), and in December the sun barely shines for half an hour. Warm layers and shoes with good grip are a must.
