Off-season — lowest travel prices with still acceptable climate.
April in Sweden (Stockholm) at 11°C (52°F) is too cool for a beach holiday, but suitable for sightseeing and hiking. The best travel months are June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 11°C (52°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 18°C (64°F), the coldest nights around -4°C (25°F) — frost does occur. The sun shines an average of 7 hours per day; there are 4 rain days with 22 mm (0.9 in) total. At 5°C (41°F), the water is still quite cool in April — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The ice melts and the city stretches towards the light: in May the sun shines almost nine hours a day, the cherry trees in Kungsträdgården bloom and terraces reopen. Temperatures climb from just under 5°C (41°F) in March to a good 16°C (61°F) in May.
Sweden welcomes spring with bonfires and choral singing. In Stockholm, the Skansen open-air museum hosts a classic Valborg with choirs, a spring speech and a large bonfire.
