Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south — and that makes planning the timing of travel complex. In the north (Hanoi) there are four distinct seasons with a cool, wet winter. In the south (Ho Chi Minh City), only rainy and dry seasons differ from each other, with consistently warm 28–35°C. The centre around Da Nang and Hội An has its best time from March to August, before the monsoon arrives.
The rainy seasons in the north and south run in opposite directions: when the south is dry (November to April), it often rains in the north, and vice versa. This opens up the strategy of starting in the south from December to February and heading north in spring. The highlight of Halong Bay is best from October to April — in the summer months, visibility is often restricted by haze and rain.
