Vietnam (Hanoi) – What you should know

Hanoi in northern Vietnam has a subtropical climate with four recognisable seasons — unusual for Southeast Asia and a key reason why the capital feels so different from the tropical coast. Winter (December to February) is surprisingly cool and overcast at typically 14–22°C, with persistent drizzle; the so-called Mưa Phùn — fine, barely visible spray mist — can persist for days and transform sightseeing tours into an impressionist experience.

The most pleasant travel months are October and November: the weather is dry and warm (typically 25–28°C), the air clearer than in summer, and the lakes and pagodas of the old town are reflected in calm light. The high-summer bustle has also died down. Spring (March/April) brings oppressive humidity before the rainy season begins — beautiful for nature but tiring for city sightseeing.

From May to September, Hanoi is hot and humid: monthly average highs reach 31–33°C, with high humidity and daily afternoon thunderstorms. Typhoons hit northern Vietnam less frequently than the central coast, but can bring heavy rainfall. Those who travel at this time experience Hanoi at its most vibrant — street kitchens steaming, the old town full of locals — but should bring heat-resistant plans.
