High summer on Lake Wakatipu: the days are long, the light lasts into the late evening and the surrounding mountains are free of snow. It is peak season for hiking, jet-boat rides and bungee jumping. Accommodation is tight, and the nights stay fresh enough for a jacket.
Autumn is the season of colour: poplars and maples turn Arrowtown and the lakeshore yellow and orange, the air is clear and the summer crowds are gone. From April there is frost at night, by May everything already looks greyer, and the lifts prepare for the winter season.
Queenstown is now a ski town: the slopes at the Remarkables and Coronet Peak are open, and in the evenings bars and lodge restaurants fill with guests from all over the world. Days are short and cold, but snow is the main attraction.
Spring arrives in waves: snowmelt swells the waterfalls, lambs stand in the paddocks, and the peaks often still hold snow while the first blossom appears below. The weather is changeable, but prices drop and the trails become more accessible week by week.
The former gold-mining town of Arrowtown, about 20 minutes' drive from Queenstown, celebrates the autumn colours with a parade, market day, music and street performers. Most events are free.
The marathon, half marathon and 10 km (6 mi) run follow lakeside paths and trails from the Arrowtown and Lake Hayes area to the finish in Queenstown. It is one of the region's biggest sporting events, and accommodation is tight that weekend.
