Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
December is the coldest winter month in Bulgaria (Golden Sands) — with highs of only 9°C (48°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 9°C (48°F) during the day and drop to 1°C (34°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 17°C (63°F), the coldest nights around -7°C (19°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 6 rain days (43 mm (1.7 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 11°C (52°F), the water is still quite cool in December — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Out of season the resort is almost empty and most hotels are shut. The Black Sea is cold and grey and the nature park behind lies still. Anyone visiting now is more likely to see Varna and the surroundings than the beach.
