The best time to visit Bulgaria (Golden Sands) is June, July, August, and September. In summer, daytime highs average 30°C (86°F), with peaks around 35°C (95°F); in winter, nights average -1°C (30°F), dropping to around -11°C (12°F) on the coldest. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 9 hours per day — ideal for beach and outdoor activities.
Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) lies about 17 kilometres (11 mi) north of Varna, set in a nature park with oak and broadleaf forest right behind the beach. That distinguishes it from Sunny Beach further south near Burgas: here there is more greenery, the park with its walking trails and, nearby, the Aladzha rock monastery. In July daytime highs average 29°C (84°F), in August 30°C (86°F), with nights at 18°C (64°F).
The swimming season is short and clearly defined: the sea is only 17°C (63°F) in May, 22°C (72°F) in June, 25°C (77°F) in July and peaks at 26°C (79°F) in August; in September it is still 23°C (73°F). August is the driest month at 12 mm (0.5 in) and just one rain day, with 9 hours of sun. June is the most changeable summer month at 60 mm (2.4 in) over six rain days, while showers are rare in July and August.
Outside summer the resort is quiet and many hotels are shut. In winter daytime highs are 7–9°C (45–48°F), nights around 0°C (32°F), around -10°C (14°F) on the coldest nights, and the Black Sea cools to 6–7°C (43–45°F). May, at 21°C (70°F) and 7 hours of sun, suits Varna and sightseeing, though it is still too cold for swimming. September is the quieter alternative to high summer.

In July, UV levels in Bulgaria (Golden Sands) reach 8 — very high on the WHO scale. High-SPF sunscreen and shade around midday are essential.
May offers great weather in Bulgaria (Golden Sands) with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
Out of season the resort is almost empty and most hotels are shut. The Black Sea is cold and grey and the nature park behind lies still. Anyone visiting now is more likely to see Varna and the surroundings than the beach.
In spring the woods behind the beach wake up, the oaks and limes turn green and the first hotels open. The days are sunny, but the sea is still too cold for swimming. A good time for walks in the nature park and trips to Varna.
High summer on the Black Sea: the beaches are full, parasols stand in rows and the promenade is busy until late. The water reaches its peak temperatures and in the evening the woods behind the resort cool things down a little. Prices are highest in August.
September is the quieter alternative to high summer: the sea is still warm, the beaches emptier and prices fall. In October it turns cooler, the last hotels close and the light grows more golden.
The music festival in nearby Varna has been held since 1926 and brings classical music, opera and jazz to stages across the city.
