Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
February is the coldest winter month in Norway (Tromsø) — with highs of only -1°C (30°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of -1°C (30°F) during the day and drop to -5°C (23°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 6°C (43°F), the coldest nights around -12°C (10°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 10 rain days (90 mm (3.5 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 3°C (37°F), the water is still quite cool in February — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The light returns faster than you would expect: by April the sun shines more than eight hours a day on average while deep snow still covers the ground. Ski touring, snowmobiling and clear aurora nights now come with long days, and temperatures hover around or just above freezing.
Cultural programme and Arctic market in the city centre. The highlights are the Norwegian lasso-throwing championship and the reindeer race, in which reindeer pull skiers over 201 metres (659 ft) down Storgata.
