Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
March is the coldest winter month in Norway (Tromsø) — with highs of only 1°C (34°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 1°C (34°F) during the day and drop to -4°C (25°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 5°C (41°F), the coldest nights around -11°C (12°F) — frost does occur. With 6 sunshine hours per day and 13 rain days (104 mm (4.1 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 3°C (37°F), the water is still quite cool in March — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The light returns faster than you would expect: by April the sun shines more than eight hours a day on average while deep snow still covers the ground. Ski touring, snowmobiling and clear aurora nights now come with long days, and temperatures hover around or just above freezing.
