Post-season — prices falling after the travel period, beaches and attractions quieter.
October is the coldest winter month in Norway (Tromsø) — with highs of only 6°C (43°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 6°C (43°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 11°C (52°F), the coldest nights around -4°C (25°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 13 rain days (118 mm (4.6 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 8°C (46°F), the water is still quite cool in October — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
A shoulder season of wind, rain and snow showers, with the days shrinking fast. In return the whale season begins in the fjords as the herring arrive, and the aurora season is in full swing. Warm layers and waterproof boots are essential.
