The Algarve is Europe's sun terrace — with over 300 sunny days a year, it is one of the most sun-drenched spots on the continent. The climate is mildly Mediterranean, though the Atlantic influences the region more strongly than the Mediterranean Sea: water temperatures in midsummer typically reach only 19–20°C (66–68°F) — noticeably cooler than on Spain's Mediterranean coasts — and a fresh breeze often blows.

Those who don't mind cold water can find excellent surfing conditions on the Algarve's west coast even in summer: the Atlantic brings powerful waves and water temperatures around 17–18°C (63–64°F) — ideal for experienced surfers, but not for swimmers.

The travel year in Algarve
November – February
The Algarve out of season: the golden coast belongs to surfers and hikers. The Rota Vicentina — one of Europe's wildest coastal trails — is empty now. Silves and Lagos without tour groups, almond blossom from mid-January.
March – May
Spring on the golden coast: ideal temperatures for hiking along the cliffs, Praia da Marinha and Ponta da Piedade without the crowds. A first swim is possible for the hardy.
June – September
Full swing: in summer the Algarve is Portugal's most-visited destination. Sagres, Lagos and Albufeira are booked out, the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade overwhelming — getting up early pays off. Surfers head to the Atlantic side at Sagres.
October
Off-season insider tip: the sea is still warm from a long summer, the beaches almost empty and the coastal trails passable again. The Silves Medieval Fair is over and the old town is yours again.
