Puerto Rico · North America
The best time to visit Puerto Rico is February and March. In summer, daytime highs average 32°C (90°F), with peaks around 34°C (93°F); in winter, nights average 23°C (73°F), dropping to around 21°C (70°F) on the coldest. All climate data are based on historical monthly averages (2005–2025) to help you plan the optimal travel time.
Puerto Rico is a US territory and combines Caribbean climate with big-city infrastructure: San Juan with its Spanish colonial old town and the forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal, plus El Yunque in the east, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System. Daytime highs average between 28°C (82°F) in winter and 31–32°C (88–90°F) in summer, and nights stay warm at 23–26°C (73–79°F). Sunshine of 6 to 7.5 hours a day is somewhat less than on the drier neighbouring islands.
The figures represent the north coast around San Juan, which is exposed to the trade-wind clouds and has rain days all year, 7 to 13 a month on average. February and March are driest at 65–85 mm (2.6–3.3 in). From May to November, 120–185 mm (4.7–7.3 in) falls a month, and November is the wettest at around 185 mm (7.3 in) on 13 rain days. The south coast around Ponce and Guánica lies in the rain shadow of the mountains and is markedly drier.
The hurricane season runs from June to November, with August to October the most dangerous stretch. Particularly worthwhile are the bioluminescent bays at Vieques, Fajardo and La Parguera and the beaches of Culebra. Anyone mixing city and beach is best off from February to April. December to February is the high season, and hotel prices in San Juan are higher in those months, but the beaches are still less crowded than on some neighbouring islands.

From March to September, UV levels in Puerto Rico reach 9 — very high on the WHO scale. High-SPF sunscreen and shade around midday are essential.
April offers great weather in Puerto Rico with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
The most pleasant time for city and beach. Highs sit around 28°C (82°F), rain days become fewer, and San Juan's old town is easy to explore on foot. In the Christmas weeks Puerto Ricans celebrate with parrandas and long fiestas that stretch into mid-January.
More warmth and more rain: showers come more often, but the sun shines strongly between the clouds. The El Yunque rainforest is lush green and the waterfalls are full. Hotel prices are lower, and the beaches empty after the high season.
Hot, muggy and rainy: the sea is bath-warm at almost 29°C (84°F), and the hurricane season reaches its peak. Anyone travelling now plans a flexible itinerary and books good travel insurance. The summer holidays fill the beaches with locals.
The wettest month of the year, with frequent rain along the north coast. The storm risk gradually fades and the island prepares for the high season. The south coast around Ponce stays markedly drier.
Four days of street festival in Old San Juan, the island's biggest celebration and the finale of the long Christmas season. Live music, crafts such as woodcarving and printmaking, and around a million visits in four days turn the old town into one big party.
On the eve of the feast of St John, Puerto Ricans celebrate on the beaches. At midnight people fall backwards into the sea at least three times to wash away bad luck and bring good fortune for the year ahead.
