November is the coldest winter month in Scotland (Edinburgh) — with highs of only 10°C (50°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, September, and October.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 10°C (50°F) during the day and drop to 4°C (39°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 14°C (57°F), the coldest nights around -4°C (25°F) — frost does occur. With 2 sunshine hours per day and 9 rain days (66 mm (2.6 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 10°C (50°F), the water is still quite cool in November — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
September is mild and calmer, then the garden trees turn and the days shrink. October brings more rainy days and low light that makes the Old Town photogenic. In November the sun averages around an hour and a half a day.
