Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
February is the coldest winter month in Scotland (Highlands) — with highs of only 7°C (45°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, September, and October.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 7°C (45°F) during the day and drop to 1°C (34°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 11°C (52°F), the coldest nights around -6°C (21°F) — frost does occur. With 3 sunshine hours per day and 11 rain days (85 mm (3.3 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 6°C (43°F), the water is still quite cool in February — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Short days, storms and rain on ten to fourteen days a month; individual roads and ferries drop out in snow. The Cairngorms hold enough snow for a small ski area, and chimneys smoke in the villages. Visitors come for solitude, whisky and winter landscapes rather than views.
