Travel season — mid-range prices, good availability.
October is one of the best travel months for Scotland (Highlands) — conditions are stable, temperatures reach 13°C (55°F), and outdoor activities are excellent.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 13°C (55°F) during the day and drop to 6°C (43°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 17°C (63°F), the coldest nights around -1°C (30°F) — frost does occur. With 2 sunshine hours per day and 13 rain days (91 mm (3.6 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 12°C (54°F), the water is still quite cool in October — a wetsuit may be useful.
Layer up — warm days and cool evenings alternate. Perfect timing for hikes and sightseeing.
Fewer visitors and still-mild days around 16°C (61°F) in September, then the deer rut, red-brown hillsides and shifting light. In October it rains on 13 days, but the best photographs happen between the showers. The midges are soon gone.
