The best time to visit Switzerland (Ticino) is June, July, August, and September. In summer, daytime highs average 28°C (82°F), with peaks around 32°C (90°F); in winter, nights average 0°C (32°F), dropping to around -5°C (23°F) on the coldest. During the best travel months, the sun shines up to 9 hours per day — ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Ticino is Switzerland south of the Alps: Locarno, Lugano and Bellinzona with its three castles lie beyond the Gotthard in a climate zone of their own. In July daytime highs average 28°C (82°F), nights stay at 18°C (64°F), and the sun shines eight to nine hours a day. Unlike the Italian shores of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, the real appeal here is granite gorges, valleys such as the Verzasca and Maggia, and the grotto culture, not just the lakeshore.
Rain arrives in large amounts but seldom for long: May is the wettest spring month at 173 mm (6.8 in), and July and August each bring around 150–160 mm (5.9–6.3 in) in only eight rain days — short, heavy thunderstorms followed by sun. Autumn is wet too, with 140–150 mm (5.5–5.9 in) in October and November. September, with 130 mm (5.1 in) over seven rain days, 23°C (73°F) by day and 8 hours of sun, is the best-balanced month for hiking.
Winter differs here from north of the Alps as well: January daytime highs are around 7°C (45°F) with only four rain days and roughly 4.5 hours of sunshine, clearly brighter than in Lucerne. The lakes are suitable for swimming in July and August, but too cool in spring. Chestnut woods and vineyards turn colour in October, though that falls in the dampest part of the year.

In July, UV levels in Switzerland (Ticino) reach 8 — very high on the WHO scale. High-SPF sunscreen and shade around midday are essential.
April offers great weather in Switzerland (Ticino) with fewer tourists and lower prices — ideal for those who want to avoid the peak season crowds.
In winter the south of Switzerland shows its bright side: while fog hangs north of the Gotthard, Locarno and Lugano often lie in sunlight. The palms by the lake stand still, the promenades belong to walkers and many grotti are closed for the winter.
Camellias and magnolias bloom by the lakes, and the valleys glow with the fresh green of the chestnut woods. May brings heavy showers, and in between Lake Maggiore gleams as if freshly washed. The hiking trails fill slowly and the beach cafés reopen.
Ticino in summer is dolce vita, Swiss style: jumps into the Verzasca, aperitivo on the piazza, thunderstorms in the evening. In August film fans gather in Locarno for the festival on the Piazza Grande. The watery landscapes of the valleys are then the best antidote to the heat.
Late-summer glow in September, then autumn colour: chestnut woods and vineyards turn yellow and red, and polenta and roasted chestnuts reach the tables in the grotti. The lakes lie calm, the swimming season is over and walkers have the paths almost to themselves.
Bellinzona's carnival, one of Ticino's major events for over 150 years: six days and nights of parades and Guggenmusik bands.
Ten days of jazz on the lakefront promenade of Ascona on Lake Maggiore, with more than 200 free concerts.
International film festival known for its open-air screenings on the Piazza Grande. During these eleven days Locarno is full and hotels are expensive.
