Thailand has three climate zones that differ by monsoon. The north (Chiang Mai) has three clear seasons: cool and dry from November to February, hot from March to May, and warm-humid from June to October. The south splits into two coasts with opposite rainy seasons: the west coast (Phuket, Krabi) is ideal from November to April; the east coast (Koh Samui) is the reverse — it rains there in autumn, while the west coast is beautiful.
The golden period for all of Thailand is November to March: the north and the west coast are dry and not too hot, and the east coast is beginning to clear up. Those who combine Bangkok and Chiang Mai are best served by this time. High season on Phuket officially begins 1 November — before then, waves and rain can make for uncomfortable beach days.
